Spring 2010 Update:

Welcome to our Spring 2010 gallery update. This year marks the fifth year since Gallery Shubido opened its "virtual doors" with the debut of this website. To celebrate, we are offering a special group of paintings by several of the most prominent Bunjinga (Nanga) Japanese painters. Among the artists represented in this new inventory include Tanomura Chikuden (1777-1835) and his friends, Aoki Mokubei (1766-1833), Okada Beisanjin (1744-1820), and Uragami Gyokudo (1745-1820). Chikuden was a multi-talented individual, having studied medicine, history, ethics, poetry, calligraphy, the tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and Zen. He was a friend of many of the other prominent painters of his day, including Tani Buncho. Chikuden’s works often highlight his talents in poetry and painting, as is the case in "Men of Virtue Waterfall-Watching" and "Literatus Enjoying a Nap". Please take a moment to view the works of Chikuden and the other Literati painters represented here.

Among the other new works added in this update, are paintings by Matsumura Goshun (1751-1811; Maruyama-Shijo School), Kusumi Morikage (1620-1690; Kano School), Sengai Gibon (1750-1837; Buddhist/Zenga School), and Fujimoto Tesseki (1815-1863; Bunjinga School).

To complete this update we have added a fine painting by Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800), one of Japan’s "Three Eccentric" painters. You may recognize Jakuchu’s "Rose and Rooster" work as one of the beautiful paintings gracing our front page banner on this website. We are now offering this masterpiece in the current inventory.

We trust that you will find something unique and perhaps unexpected among the works presented here. To all of our customers we thank you for visiting our website. We particularly wish to welcome our new customers.
